Towson, Maryland

Towson (/ˈtaʊsən/)[1] is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland. The population was 55,197 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat[2] and the second-most populated unincorporated county seat in the United States (after Ellicott City, the seat in nearby Howard County, southwest of Baltimore).[3]

The first inhabitants of the future Towson and central Baltimore County region were the Susquehannock people who hunted in the area. Their region included all of Baltimore County, though their primary settlement was farther northeast along the Susquehanna River.[4]

Towson was settled in 1752 when Pennsylvania brothers, William and Thomas Towson, began farming an area of Sater's Hill, northeast of the present-day York and Joppa Roads.[5] William's son, Ezekiel, opened the Towson Hotel to serve the increasing traffic of farmers bringing their produce and livestock to the port of Baltimore. He built the hotel at current-day Shealy Avenue and York Road, near the area's main crossroads.[6] The village became known as "Towsontown".[3][7] The property in West Towson came from two land grants: 400 acre Gott's Hope in 1719, and Gunner's Range in 1706.[8]

Whiteford, Maryland

The town, a part of the Whiteford-Cardiff Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Until 1978, this community was served by the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad at milepost 42.4.[2][3] Also on the National Register are the Broad Creek Soapstone Quarries and Slate Ridge School.[2]

Union Bridge, Maryland

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 975 people, 394 households, and 251 families residing in the town. The population density was 937.5 inhabitants per square mile (362.0/km2). There were 429 housing units at an average density of 412.5 per square mile (159.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 91.7% White, 5.1% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

There were 394 households of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.

The median age in the town was 39.2 years. 23.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.3% were from 25 to 44; 26.2% were from 45 to 64; and 15.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 48.6% male and 51.4% female.

Maryland Route 354

Maryland Route 354 (MD 354) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs 14.98 miles (24.11 km) from MD 12 near Snow Hill north to MD 346 in Willards. MD 354 parallels the Pocomoke River, connecting eastern Wicomico County and northwestern Worcester with Snow Hill. The state highway was first constructed from Willards in the mid-1910s. The remainder of MD 354 was completed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with little change in the highway since.

MD 354 begins at an intersection with MD 12 in the hamlet of Indiantown north of Snow Hill. Nassawango Road heads southwest from the junction toward Pocomoke State Forest. MD 354 heads north as Whiton Road, a two-lane road that passes through farmland and parallels the Pocomoke River at a distance. The state highway crosses Tilghman Race before passing through the hamlet of Whiton and entering Wicomico County, where the name of the highway changes to Powellville Road. In Powellville, MD 354 intersects MD 374 (Burbage Crossing Road) at an acute angle and MD 350 (Mount Hermon Road) at a right angle before crossing Adkins Mill Pond. After passing through more farmland, the state highway enters the town of Willards and intersects U.S. Route 50 (Ocean Gateway). MD 354 continues north to its terminus at MD 346 (Old Ocean City Road), where Main Street continues north into the center of Willards.[1][2]

The first section of the highway that was to become MD 354 was paved from the Pennsylvania Railroad crossing on the north side of Willards south to Friendship Road north of Powellville in 1917.[3] The pavement was extended south to Powellville by 1921.[4] Paving began from Indiantown toward Whiton by 1927.[5][6] MD 354 was completed south to Whiton in 1930.[7] The gap south of Whiton was filled in 1933, completing the highway.[8][9] The state highway between Powellville and Willards was widened in 1956, the same year the northern end was rolled back from the railroad crossing in Willards to US 50 (now MD 346).[10][11]

Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Upper Marlboro, officially the Town of Upper Marlboro, is the seat of Prince George's County, Maryland in the United States.[6] The population within the town limits was 631 at the 2010 U.S. Census,[7] although Greater Upper Marlboro is many times larger.

Upper Marlboro was established in 1706 as "Marlborough Town", after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an ancestor of Winston Churchill. In 1744, the town was renamed to "Upper Marlborough". In the late 19th century, the town's name changed from Upper Marlborough to Upper Marlboro. The name change is linked to a postal clerk who felt that the last three letters, "ugh", did not properly fit on the rubber stamps being used at the time. By 1893, postal guides were referring to the town as Upper Marlboro and the name stuck, despite a proposed ballot to have it changed back in 1968.

The area of Upper Marlboro was first settled around 1695. It was named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an ancestor of Winston Churchill. The land, which was to become the town, was part of several estates known as Grove Landing, Meadows, and Darnall's Chance, owned by the Brooke, Beall, and Darnall families, respectively.

Williamsport, Maryland

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Williamsport has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[9]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,137 people, 960 households, and 543 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,054.8 inhabitants per square mile (793.4/km2). There were 1,080 housing units at an average density of 1,038.5 per square mile (401.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.6% White, 2.5% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 960 households of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.4% were non-families. 38.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.73.

Maryland Route 244

Maryland Route 244 (MD 244) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as Medleys Neck Road, the state highway runs 10.48 miles (16.87 km) from MD 5 near Leonardtown east to MD 249 in Valley Lee. MD 244 parallels MD 5 in central St. Mary's County, serving several communities on Medleys Neck between Breton Bay and the St. Mary's River, including Beauvue. The state highway was constructed as part of three different state highways—MD 244 from Leonardtown, MD 250 from Valley Lee, and MD 251 through Drayden—between the late 1920s and late 1930s. MD 244 assumed the courses of MD 250 and MD 251 in the mid-1940s. The portion of MD 244 east of MD 249 was removed from the state highway system in the mid-1980s.

MD 244 begins at an intersection with MD 5 adjacent to Leonardtown High School, Leonardtown Middle School, and the St. Mary's County Fairgrounds. The state highway heads south from the Leonardtown area as two-lane road Medleys Neck Road through a forested area. After crossing Moldier Run, MD 244 passes by Foxes Point Lane, which leads to the Indian Village Archaeological Park. In the hamlet of Beauvue, the state highway intersects Breton Beach Road, which leads to a series of small beach resorts on Breton Bay and the Potomac River. MD 244 curves to the southeast and passes White Beach Beach Road, which leads to the namesake community. The state highway continues east, crossing Poplar Hill Creek before passing Mulberry Fields Road, which serves the namesake historic home. At Chingville Road, MD 244 curves to the south toward Valley Lee. In Valley Lee, the state highway turns east onto Blake Creek Road. MD 244 passes St. George's Episcopal Church before reaching its eastern terminus at MD 249 (Piney Point Road). A former section of MD 244, Drayden Road, heads east from MD 249 a short distance south of the MD 244 intersection. The county highway heads east toward the hamlet of Drayden and the historic homes Porto Bello and West St. Mary's Manor on the St. Mary's River.[1][2]

MD 244 was constructed as part of three highways: MD 244 from the Leonardtown end, MD 250 from the Valley Lee end, and MD 251 along Drayden Road.[3] MD 244 was constructed from MD 5 to Beauvue in 1925 and 1926.[4][5] The state highway was extended east in 1-mile (1.6 km) segments in 1930, 1933, and 1934.[6][7][8][9] MD 244 was completed to near Chingville Road in 1939.[3][10] The first section of MD 250 was Blake Creek Road from MD 249 to the present right-angle turn onto Medleys Neck Road.[4][5] MD 250 was extended to near Chingville Road in two sections beginning in 1930 and completed in 1935.[6][7][8][9] MD 251 was constructed from MD 249 east to Cherryfield Road in Drayden in 1928 and east to Porto Bello in 1930.[6][11][12] The gap between MD 244 and MD 250 centered on Chingville Road was closed with the construction of 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of connecting highway around 1942.[13] By 1946, MD 244 was extended east over the lengths of MD 250 and MD 251.[14] MD 244 was reduced to its current length when the Drayden Road portion of the state highway was transferred to county maintenance around 1987.[15]

Milford Mill, Maryland

The true name of the area is "Milford", but the name "Milford Mill" has stuck with the community. The name "Milford Mill" comes from the name of an old mill located in nearby Pikesville along Milford Mill Road.[2]

Milford Mill is near the Baltimore County communities of Pikesville, Randallstown, and Woodlawn, around the intersection of Liberty Road and Milford Mill Road. Some areas of Milford Mill are as follows:

Windsor Mill is an area near Woodlawn that is similar to Milford Mill. Some of the main roads in the area include Windsor Mill Road, Windsor Boulevard, and Rolling Road. Landmarks in this area include Windsor Mill Middle School and Rutherford Business Park.

Vienna, Maryland

Vienna was founded in 1706. It thrived on trade, shipbuilding and tobacco farming. The wreck of a 45-foot cargo ship that was likely built at a small shipyard or plantation in Maryland was found in 2015 under the US 50 Bridge over the Nanticoke River. Charring suggests it was torched by British sympathizers in the 1780s.[5] The British raided the town repeatedly during the American Revolutionary War, and again during the War of 1812. This led to the building of a wall across the city's waterfront on the Nanticoke River. This wall is in ruins today.[6]Handsell was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.[7]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 271 people, 115 households, and 71 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,426.3 inhabitants per square mile (550.7/km2). There were 143 housing units at an average density of 752.6 per square mile (290.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 90.8% White, 7.0% African American, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.

There were 115 households of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.3% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.87.

Woodbine, Maryland

Woodbine is an unincorporated rural community in Howard and Carroll counties, Maryland, United States. It is part of the Baltimore metropolitan area. It is located southeast of Frederick, west of Baltimore, north of Washington, D.C., and east of Mount Airy. The community was named for the woodbine plant, which grew in the community in fields and along riverbanks.

Woodbine is located at the juncture of the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and the road that runs north from Lisbon to Winfield on Liberty Road (Maryland Route 26) and through to Westminster, Maryland. The original road from Baltimore to Frederick runs just north of Lisbon, following a slight ridge line westward half way to Woodbine (the road was finally paved in the 1960s). This was the original trail that existed before the National Road was built (the road that runs through Lisbon).

During the Civil War, Confederate cavalry crossed the Patapsco River at Woodbine and at Hoods Mill, just a few miles east on the river and the B&O Railroad, scouting the Union Army that was on its way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The main road at that time ran just west of the existing road and up the west side of a creek that runs south and that joins with the Patapsco River just 50 yards west of the existing road. That original road, now partly unused, runs north 100 yards from the river and then Eastward (Gum Road) to join up with the existing road today. There was no bridge across the Patapsco River at that time, just a ford in the river.
